Background & Experience

Brenda de Vries graduated from the Fotoacademie Amsterdam in 2003. She has since received numerous prizes for her work at The International Photography Awards, Prix de la Photographie, The Photography Masters Cup (USA) and Luerzer’s Archive The 200 Best Advertising Photographers Worldwide. De Vries is accomplished in the whole photographic process, from concept, styling, make-up, lighting to retouching and cropping the final image, also made possible by the people she chooses to work with. What sets her apart is her Renaissance approach, excelling in diverse photographic styles: Portraits, commercial, art and fashion…

Work Philosophy

She calls herself a ‘Professional Button Pusher’ as being a photographer is so much more than only pushing the button of the camera. It’s about searching for the right corner on location, deciding what kind of light to use, finding the ‘right’ styling that fits it all and what grooming or make up will add to the image? Then the photographer can start to ‘push’ some more psychological buttons to inspire the model to move in a certain way. There are so many  decisive moments in the process of creating an image, that pushing the button of the camera is the final moment where everything should come together. And from there on it is all about selecting and editing the image,  another area where an enormous amount of decisions needs to be made…

Attention to Details

Brenda believes in a conceptual approach, where all the details have to add something to the image. Meaning location, lights, model choice, perspective, hair & make up, styling, facial expressions, body language, grading choices and retouching style – they all deserve proper attention. Off course this always happens in close co-operation with the team and clients.

Her aim is to ‘push the button’ at the right moment where the expressions of a model feels like an ‘in-between-moment’. The moment where ‘realism’ and ‘staged images’ are meeting one and another. As long as she doesn’t feel that specific moment was captured, she will keep on shooting…
