“Photography started as a hobby for me. Today I still enjoy it as much as back then.”

Before photography I attended the ‘Amsterdam Fashion Instituut’ (AMFI), back in the days called ‘Mr Koetsier’. I got myself specialized in the technical side of the apparel industry. The work I got myself in did not make me smile as much as photography did, so I changed career.

In 2003 I graduated from de ‘Foto Academie’ in Amsterdam, while being a Traffic Manager at BSUR, an advertising agency. Then I assisted Carin Verbruggen for about a year. She taught me how to look for simplicity and aesthetics. I still love her work.

In 2016 I graduated from the ‘Sandberg Institute’, under another name. The other me, makes work related to mental health and uses photography, video, drawing, painting and is still exploring.

More background

I was born in Amsterdam South-East, next to a famous mall called ‘Kraaiennest’. It did not take my parents too long to decide to start living somewhere else, where it would be more safe. So we ended up in ‘Hoofddorp’, which I always call ‘Headvillage’. A village under the clouds of Schiphol Airport.

During my studies I moved back to Amsterdam. For my first traineeship I traveled to Italy, close to Como. There I learned to print on silk by hand and make different color collections of the prints. Just after my photography studies I traveled to the desert in Morocco, also known as the ‘Western Sahara’. There I tried to photograph women. And that sounds easier then it was. It was a huge experience for me to find out that people can see your camera as something ‘scary’.

Next to photography, I love to make GIFs and short videos with pictures I shot. StopMotion I used once to make a video too. I love the quirky hick ups that can create a feeling of joy for me.
